Oakland Merchants suppress street food vendors?

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

When you think Oakland street food you think Burrito and Taco Trucks. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had many more independent options? If you were bar hopping in the Ave and you could grab some gourmet munchies?

It seems there are food vendors trying to bring us variety but Oakland Merchants are fighting them off in fear of losing customers to variety and options.

I can understand that these Merchants that have been set up a long time do not want to lose customers to street food vendors and are scared of going out of business, but I mean really? We the consumer should have the choice where to shop and who stays in business.

This is why I never understood the Walmart is so evil standpoint. People choose to shop there because it benefits them. If that means Fred’s Vacuum Repair Shop goes under then so be it. He was over charging and his customers were not loyal. Walmart wins and the customer is happy now.

Same thing here, if you lose customers to new businesses offering what we want then you’re doing it wrong. In this case it seems Oakland Merchants are playing the suppressor role and holding down independent businesses. I am not a fan of this.
